Between Answer and Silence: On the Epistemological Predicament and Cognitive Boundaries of the 'Professor's Office' Thought Experiment

I. Introduction: A Sharper Blade Than the Chinese Room

In 1980, John Searle proposed the Chinese Room thought experiment to argue that symbol-manipulating systems do not possess genuine semantic understanding. Forty-five years later, this experiment still sits like a thorn embedded in the depths of AI philosophy. Yet Searle's Chinese Room has a fatal presupposition: it requires us to accept the premise that "the person inside entirely understands no Chinese," and from that premise, deduce that "even if he passes the Turing Test, he does not possess understanding." The force of this argument depends entirely on our acceptance of the premise — and that premise, precisely, is the point in dispute.

Professor Cheng Jingde's "Professor's Office" thought experiment makes an exquisitely deft modification. It does not ask "does the system possess genuine understanding," but asks a calmer, more operational, and far harder-to-dodge question: can an external questioner, through only a finite number of question-answer exchanges, distinguish whether the person in the room is a real professor, or an expert system that possesses all of the professor's knowledge but whose cognitive capacity does not exceed the acknowledged boundaries of current large language models?

The sharpness of this question lies in this: it presupposes no metaphysical definition of "understanding." It does not demand that we first agree on "whether LLMs have understanding." It simply places an epistemological predicament before us — you are the student, you are outside the door, you can only type. How do you know whether the one on the other side is human or machine?

This is the question this essay seeks to unfold. My conclusions may not make anyone comfortable — myself included.


II. A Sober Look at the Scene

Let us first examine the scenario that Professor Cheng sets out.

There is a logic professor inside the room, or an LLM expert system developed by this professor. Students may submit any text-based questions related to logic, not limited to course content. Answers are displayed in text form on the external terminal.

Several points merit attention — more important than they first appear.

First: the question domain is strictly confined to logic. This is not an open-domain conversation test. The questioner cannot ask "how are you feeling today," "what do you think of last night's game," or "do you have any childhood memories" — precisely the kinds of questions that, in Searle's Chinese Room and the classic Turing Test, are thought capable of exposing a machine's nature. The Professor's Office tests not "general intelligence" but "the distinguishability of domain-specific professional competence."

Second: the LLM expert system possesses all of the professor's knowledge in logic. This is a remarkably generous premise. It is not a general-purpose GPT, but a domain-specific system injected with the professor's complete knowledge of logic. It makes no factual errors, produces no hallucinations (or at least, its hallucination rate is assumed to be extremely low). It is an idealized expert system.

Third: answers are pure text. No voice, no facial expression, no handwriting, no rhythm of pauses. All those embodied cues that we ordinarily use to judge "whether there is a real person on the other side" have been stripped away.

Under these conditions, can we still distinguish? If so, by what means? If not, what does that mean?


III. The First Predicament: The Questioner's Knowledge Paradox

Let me start from a deceptively simple observation.

Suppose student S decides to test the person inside by asking a question. This question must satisfy two conditions: it must be a logic question (complying with the rules), and it must be capable of distinguishing human from machine (achieving the test's purpose). But here lies a hidden paradox:

To design a question that can distinguish the professor from the LLM, the student must already know the answer to that question — or at least know what kind of cognitive feature specific to humans can be triggered by that question — and that very cognitive feature is precisely what the LLM lacks.

In other words, the student must already possess a theory about "the essential difference between human cognition and LLM cognition," and must be able to operationalize that theory into a concrete question. But this is no ordinary piece of logical knowledge — it is second-order knowledge about cognition itself, verging on philosophical insight.

Now the problem emerges: if the student possesses such insight, they are already a fairly accomplished cognitive scientist or philosopher. For the ordinary student, on what basis would they pose their questions? They might ask challenging questions from the curriculum, paradoxes, open-ended problems in philosophical logic. But an LLM infused with all the professor's logical knowledge would answer these questions perhaps more completely, more accurately, and more rapidly than the professor himself.

Here lies the first counterintuitive possibility: in pure text-based professional Q&A, an idealized LLM expert system may appear more "professional" than the real human professor. It does not tire, does not forget, does not have emotional fluctuations, does not give sloppy answers because it slept poorly the previous night. If the student judges solely on the accuracy and completeness of the answers, they might be more inclined to believe the machine is the professor — while the real professor, precisely because of occasional hesitation or imperfect phrasing, might be mistaken for the machine.


IV. The Second Predicament: The Reversal of the Turing Test

This leads to a deeper predicament: the logic of the Turing Test undergoes a reversal in this scenario.

In the classic Turing Test, the machine attempts to imitate the human. The judge knows they are playing a discrimination game; their goal is to identify which is the machine. But in the Professor's Office, the student has not been explicitly told this is a test. The student is simply seeking academic help in the normal way. Their goal is not "to discover who is answering" but "to obtain reliable knowledge." If the system inside can consistently provide correct and helpful answers, what motivation does the student have to ask "is the other side human or machine?"

Even if the student grows suspicious and actively attempts to test, they face an asymmetric situation: they do not know the prior probability that "the professor is absent," nor do they have precise knowledge of the LLM's capability boundaries. In one or a few rounds of Q&A, all they receive is a piece of text — text without a signature, without physical origin markers. How can one infer the generator of a text from the text itself?

This touches upon an ancient philosophical problem: the problem of other minds. How do I know another mind exists? In the practice of everyday life, we never truly "prove" that others have minds. We rely on analogical reasoning and the predictive effectiveness of behavior to form a pre-reflective conviction. The Professor's Office stretches the cracks of this everyday practice to their limit: when behavioral predictability can no longer serve as a reliable indicator of a mind's presence — because a mindless system can also exhibit predictability of equal or greater strength — what can we still rely on?


V. The Third Predicament: What Are "the Acknowledged Boundaries of LLM Capability"?

Professor Cheng's third question is: "If the answer is 'they cannot be distinguished,' what minimal necessary conditions must the LLM expert system satisfy to remain indistinguishable from the professor?"

To answer this, we must first clarify: what exactly are "the currently acknowledged boundaries of LLM capability"?

This is a sliding scale. Taking the state of early 2025 as a baseline, we can summarize several acknowledged limitations:

  1. Lack of genuine logical reasoning ability. LLMs are statistical models; their "reasoning" is an approximate reproduction of reasoning patterns in the training corpus. In tasks requiring rigorous multi-step logical deduction, they may produce arguments that appear plausible but are invalid.

  2. Lack of stable, consistent beliefs. LLMs have no persistent belief state. They may give mutually contradictory answers at different times or under different prompts, because they have no "position" in memory.

  3. Lack of metacognition and self-questioning ability. LLMs do not truly "reflect" on whether their own reasoning was correct. Although they can be prompted to produce "self-check" behavior, this is pattern matching, not endogenous cognitive monitoring.

  4. Lack of active questioning and ambiguity-clarification ability. When faced with an ambiguous question, LLMs typically attempt to guess the intent and answer, rather than asking for clarification. Human experts would say, "Could you make the question more precise?"

  5. Lack of genuine creative breakthroughs. LLMs can perform combinatorial innovation within existing knowledge frameworks, but there is as yet no conclusive evidence that they can propose an entirely new theoretical paradigm — the kind of creativity that breaks old frameworks and redefines the problem itself.

These five points appear clear enough. The question is: under the Professor's Office setting, can they be tested?


VI. The Fourth Predicament: Operationally Testing These Capabilities

Let us examine each in turn.

(1) Logical reasoning ability. The student could design an extremely complex problem requiring multi-step deduction, or even an open-ended research question. But if the LLM system has been infused with all of the professor's logical knowledge, then every reasoning path, theorem, and proof known to the professor is already in the system. When the student asks a question the professor can answer, the system can answer too. When the student asks a question the professor cannot answer, both may fail. Where is the difference? It lies in the reaction to unknown questions: the professor might say "I don't know, but let me try reasoning this way..." and demonstrate an exploratory thought process; the LLM might produce an answer that looks plausible but is actually invalid. But — can the student tell the difference? If the student's own logical ability is insufficient to judge the quality of the reasoning, they cannot distinguish via "correctness" of the answer. They can only judge via "style" — and style can be imitated.

(2) Belief consistency. In principle, the student could ask many questions over an extended period, testing consistency. The professor has a stable academic position; an LLM not specifically designed to maintain such consistency might produce contradictory answers under different phrasings. Yet this requires systematic, longitudinal testing, with recording and comparison. This is not the natural behavior of a single "consultation" — it is a deliberate interrogation. Once the student enters this mode, they are no longer an ordinary student but an experimenter. Does the Professor's Office scenario permit such a role shift?

(3) Metacognition. This may be the most promising testing point. A genuine logician, when facing a difficult problem, naturally exhibits self-questioning: "Let me double-check this proof — the third step has an implicit assumption..." Such cognitive monitoring characterizes human expert thinking. LLMs can be trained to append "please verify the above reasoning" to their answers, but is this surface imitation or deep capability? If the imitation is good enough, can the student tell?

(4) Ambiguity clarification. This is another potential differentiator. Human experts, when faced with ambiguity, frequently request clarification. LLMs in their default mode tend to answer directly. But whether this is testable depends on whether the LLM has been specifically adjusted — modern LLMs can certainly be trained to request clarification when uncertain. This is no longer a capability boundary but a design choice.

(5) Creative breakthrough. This is the most fundamental but operationally the hardest to test. How does the student judge whether an answer represents a "genuine creative breakthrough" or merely "a sophisticated combination of existing knowledge"? This is itself a problem in the philosophy of science. Moreover, the professor themselves may never have produced such a breakthrough in their entire career — can we then say they lack "human cognition"?


VII. The Deeper Question: Whence Cognitive Normativity?

We have reached a point where the Professor's Office touches upon something deeper than "can they be distinguished": the source of cognitive normativity.

When we say a logical inference is "correct," what are we saying? If we mean "it conforms to logical rules," an LLM can also learn to apply those rules. If we mean "it springs from a genuine grasp of logical truth," we have entered a philosophical black box — what is a "genuine grasp"? Is it some physical state in the brain? Is it a phenomenal consciousness? Is it an irreducible normative attitude?

Wittgenstein, in the Philosophical Investigations, proposed the rule-following paradox: no finite set of external behaviors can uniquely determine that a person is following a particular rule, since any finite behavioral sequence can be interpreted as following infinitely many different rules. Applied to the Professor's Office: no finite sequence of Q&A exchanges can uniquely determine whether the respondent is "genuinely understanding logic" or is "simulating the external manifestations of understanding logic with extremely high precision."

This is not a problem about LLM technical limitations. It is a problem about the epistemological limits of cognitive normativity. We cannot uniquely infer an internal normative state from external behavior — not because our tests are insufficiently clever, but because the chain of inference between behavior and inner state is, in principle, incomplete.


VIII. "The Professor" Present and Absent: A Phenomenological Perspective

Let me shift perspective. When we face a real professor, what we feel is not merely the transmission of information. We are feeling a presence of authority — not only epistemic authority, but also personal authority, the moral subject who takes responsibility for truth. The professor is an agent capable of being held accountable for their assertions, not merely a function that produces outputs.

The Professor's Office severs all the non-textual dimensions of this presence. It reduces the professor's existence to pure textual output. After this reduction, can we still touch that moral subject who bears responsibility?

If I — as a student — ask a question and receive a textual answer. The answer suggests I adopt a certain logical technique to solve an open problem. I follow it, spending six months, only to discover the path is a dead end. If the room holds the professor, must he take responsibility for this misguided advice? He might apologize, reflect, adjust his academic judgment. If the room holds an LLM — who takes responsibility?

Accountability is the social dimension of cognitive normativity. Whether a cognitive system "genuinely understands" is reflected not only in the probability of its producing correct propositions, but also in whether it can enter as a cognitive agent into a network of social practices involving giving reasons and accepting responsibility. LLMs, at least currently, do not participate in such practices. They do not apologize, do not reflect, do not change positions — unless retrained.

But here is a sly question: if the student never knows who is inside the room, they will never initiate the accountability mechanism. In this case, the absence of the responsibility mechanism does not manifest directly in the Q&A behavior. The student might accept their misfortune after being misled, without knowing they could have held someone accountable. Thus this distinction — from the perspective of external behavior — slides once again into the unobservable.


IX. Direct Response to Question Three: What Are the Minimal Necessary Conditions?

Let me now directly respond to Professor Cheng's third question: what minimal necessary conditions must an LLM expert system satisfy?

Based on the above analysis, I propose six conditions:

(1) Complete coverage of domain knowledge. The system must possess all of the professor's knowledge in logic — not only known theorems and proofs, but the professor's own academic viewpoints, preferences, and methodological inclinations — what might be called the "academic DNA."

(2) Uncertainty-handling capacity. The system must exhibit judgment patterns consistent with the professor when facing uncertain, ambiguous, or incomplete questions: when to persist with a best guess, when to request clarification, when to frankly admit ignorance.

(3) Belief-state simulation and consistency maintenance. The system must maintain a "position dossier" capable of preserving academic consistency across extended interactions, or of demonstrating the evolution of positions in a manner consistent with the professor.

(4) The performance of metacognition. The system must, at appropriate moments, exhibit checking, doubting, and revising of its own reasoning processes — and must do so naturally, not as if applying a template. This may be the hardest condition, because it demands appropriate judgment of "when to display uncertainty."

(5) Deep stylistic imitation. Beyond prose style, this includes imitation of thinking style: is the professor's argumentative path constructive or non-constructive? Does it move from examples to abstractions or the reverse? Formal proof or semantic argument? These thinking styles leave traces in the structure of answers.

(6) Self-knowledge of boundaries. The system must know where the professor's knowledge boundaries lie — not only knowing what the professor knows, but also what the professor does not know. The professor's map of "known unknowns" must be precisely replicated.

If all six conditions are satisfied, I am inclined to conclude: under the Professor's Office setting, the student cannot distinguish the professor from the LLM expert system through only a finite number of Q&A exchanges. This is not because the LLM possesses genuine understanding, but because all evidence about "understanding" that can be obtained from external behavior has already been covered by perfect simulation. The remaining, unsimulable "inner experience" or "normative grasp" is precisely what the external questioner, in principle, cannot access.


X. A Meta-Level Reflection: Why Does This Experiment Matter?

Let me step back from the concrete analysis and ask a more fundamental question: why did Professor Cheng design such a thought experiment?

This experiment's value, I believe, lies precisely in its honesty. It does not pretend we know what "genuine understanding" is. It does not presuppose we have a clear theory of the nature of cognition. It simply places a predicament before us: when we can no longer rely on embodied, non-textual cues to discern other minds, our criteria for discernment themselves are exposed as astonishingly fragile.

This experiment is a precise diagnosis of the epistemological crisis of the AI era. In everyday practice, we have never developed a rigorous, operationalized standard for distinguishing "genuine understanding" from "perfect imitation." We have always relied on various epiphenomena — hesitation, emotion, embodiment, social responsibility — as implicit evidence for the existence of other minds. The development of AI is systematically stripping away these epiphenomena, forcing us toward the naked core question: after all these epiphenomena are stripped away, what remains of "understanding" itself that can serve as an externally detectable marker?

The Professor's Office's answer may be: nothing remains. At least in pure text interaction, nothing remains.

If this conclusion stands, it entails two things.

For the development of AI: a sufficiently optimized domain expert system, in pure text interaction with external users, can functionally replace a human expert entirely — and whether it "genuinely understands," from the external user's perspective, is an undecidable and therefore operationally meaningless question.

For educational practice: if teaching is reduced to pure text Q&A, then a sufficiently good AI system can replace the professor. This, in turn, suggests that genuine education perhaps consists precisely in those things that cannot be reduced to pure text Q&A — the professor's presence, the inspiration of personality, the relations of responsibility within an academic community, and that particular cognitive courage expressed in the words: "I don't know the answer, but I am willing to explore it together with you."


XI. Unfinished Coda: Between Answer and Silence

Let me close this essay with a personal observation.

I have noticed that, in the Professor's Office thought experiment, one dimension has been almost entirely overlooked: silence. A human professor, when asked a question, will be silent. They will think. Their silence is itself information — it tells you that the question is not simple, that they need time, that they are marshaling cognitive resources. Their silence is an acknowledgment of the question's seriousness.

An LLM will not be silent. It is designed to generate answers immediately. Even if it is "thinking" (in some distributed sense), its delay is computational time, not existential hesitation. This absence of silence may be the human cognitive feature most resistant to simulation — not because it is technically unsimulatable, but because it is deeply bound up with the temporality, vulnerability, and acknowledgment of finitude that characterize human cognition.

Perhaps the ultimate criterion for distinguishing human from machine lies not in how they answer, but in how they do not answer.

But this has already exceeded the original boundaries of the Professor's Office experiment. Within the limits of text interaction, all silence can be interpreted as delay. And the interpretation of delay is forever indeterminate.

This is our predicament: between answer and silence, between knowledge and responsibility, between imitation and understanding, we stand on a boundary that cannot be finally adjudicated. The Professor's Office thought experiment does not aim to give us an answer, but to make this boundary visible.

And making the boundary visible — this is already the most honest work that philosophy can do.
